Some esports comebacks happen quietly. This one didn’t. On July 1, one of Counter-Strike’s most legendary brands returned from the dead — and immediately threw itself into the deep end against top international competition.
From $16 Million Sale to a $212,000 Buyback
Luminosity Gaming hasn’t fielded a Counter-Strike roster since 2019. Before that, the Brazilian-founded org was the team that won the MLG Columbus Major in 2016, launching the careers of legends like FalleN and coldzera before the entire roster was poached to form SK Gaming later that same year. Luminosity kept grinding for a few more seasons but never recaptured that magic, and by 2019 the org’s founder, Steve Maida, sold the brand to Aquilini GameCo for more than $16 million.
Then, this January, Maida bought it back — for roughly $212,000, a fraction of what he sold it for. He’s been open about why: rebuilding around Counter-Strike had been the plan ever since he stepped away in 2021, and he wanted to “put LG where it belongs, where it all started.”
The Roster: Poaching an Underdog Story Straight Out of Cologne
Rather than start from scratch, Luminosity went shopping at one of the storylines of the summer. Ukrainian org Monteturned heads at the IEM Cologne Major 2026, upsetting Legacy, paiN, and PARIVISION on the way to a 12th–14th place finish — one of the tournament’s biggest underdog runs, even against a field that included eventual champions Falcons.
Monte tried to lock the core down with contract extensions before the Major even ended. It didn’t work. Once the run wrapped, three of the four core players told the org they were moving on — and Luminosity was waiting.
The new lineup:
- afro (Aurélien Drapier) — French AWPer, joined as a free agent
- AZUWU (Oscar Bell) — young British talent, free agent
- Bymas (Aurimas Pipiras) — a name MOUZ fans will recognize, free agent
- Rainwaker (Aleks Petrov) — the only one Luminosity had to actually buy out of his Monte contract
- lux (Lucas Meneghini) — Brazilian in-game leader, arriving from Legacy after being benched there in February
Four-fifths of the roster walked in for free. Monte, meanwhile, is left rebuilding from nothing.
Straight Into the Fire
No warm-up matches, no soft landing — the new-look Luminosity debuted immediately at XSE Pro League 2026 in Guangzhou (running July 1–12), facing CIS side Team Nemesis in a best-of-one Swiss-stage opener. The result: a 13–10 loss. They’ll need to win three of their remaining five matches just to reach the playoffs.
Rough debut aside, the storyline itself is the win here. An iconic brand, a Major-tested core, and a founder finishing a promise he made to himself five years ago — all landing in the same 48 hours. Whether Luminosity 2.0 can turn Cologne magic into consistent results is the question the rest of the summer will answer.
Other Transfers Worth Watching This Week
The Luminosity move wasn’t the only shake-up on the CS2 transfer wire:
- Ukrainian rising star cairne left Ninjas in Pyjamas for fnatic, completing the org’s move to an all-Ukrainian roster under IGL fEAR.
- Magisk, the four-time Major winner, joined BC.Game as in-game leader, slotting in alongside s1mple and electronic.
- G2 benched AWPer SunPayus in favor of 21-year-old r1nkle, fresh off being let go by NIP.
